For much of the time we see him in Pynchon's narrative(s) Weissmann isn't a
Nazi at all: first off he's a Prussian military attache in Sudwest (at
Foppl's Siege Party in *V.*), then he returns there as a representative of
the Weimar govt I take it, and finally with Katje and Gottfried he's just a
man in a domestic relationship, albeit an unusual one. We do get glimpses of
him as a working Nazi bureaucrat in Pokler's story. I don't know that he is
ever explicitly characterised as (a?) Gnostic, unless you consider the Duino
Elegies are part of the Apocrypha. And "evil" is just a word.
