... are there academics proper (and/or improper, even? Far more likely ...)
"here," at least in any ongoing, active capacity? Hard to tell. I can't
imagine anyone, tenured, seeking tenure, or one day hoping to be seeking
tenure, much less interested in responsible scholarship or whatever,
engaging in the not-all-too-elegant nastiness by which we seem to pass much
of the time here. I mean, me, I've long since given up, this is my last,
best hope, but ... well, I'd be happy not to have to succumb to the
occasional urge to retaliate, is all. I mean, sorry 'bout that "sic' tehre,
but, welll, if yr gonna cite someone, you really oughhta cite 'em, and I can
take responsibility only for me own typos (of which there are many, see
above ...). But there's a long tradition of dismissing what someone says by
virtue of how they say it (if yr into that style/content distinction), even
ol' Thomas Paine wasn't allowed to petition Parliament 'cos his English
weren't quite was passed for Proper there (see Olivia Smith, The Politics of
Language, 1791-1819) ...
