... which is the title of the review of Johannes Fabian's Out of Our
Minds: Reason and Madness in the Exploration of Central Africa
(Berkeley: U of California P, 2000) in the current issue of Lingua
Franca (Sept. 2000).   Fabian is a Dutch anthropologist, author of,
among other things, the very excellent Time and the Other: How
Anthropology Constructs Its Object (New York: Columbia UP, 1983).
Unfortunately, the review is not on line (http://www.linguafranca.com),
but, to quote a marginal blurb, "Europeans saw Africa through a haze of
hormones, dope, fear, and heat."  Thought y'all'd be interested ...
