Even Fang finds it tough keeping up the feigned nonchalance and ritual
reluctance so necessary for a fictional character, in the presence of the
Author. It's hard being make believe AND preternatural, knowing the
intentions before they're inked.
"Oh yawn yes of course, seen it all before, birds slashing one another to
death, sixteen go in one comes out alive, indeed mm-hmmm, and a jolly time
betwixt, whilst the Substance we are not supposed to acknowledge drips and
flies ev'rywhere..." [M&D, p.24. HH&Co.]
Kind of like being in the audience at Jacobean Revenge Play.
