Among a whole lot of other things, MB was also
the guy who wrote, in his influential _Modern
American Novel_, that "Pynchon's novels are
central to contemporary American writing."

RIP,

Heikki

It is with deep regret that I have to tell all his friends
across Europe and beyond that Malcolm Bradbury died this
Monday afternoon. Though he had been ill, it was assumed
that he would slowly recover. His death thus came as a
complete and devastating shock. As a novelist and a
critic, as a man who, through the creative writing
programme at UEA, launched the career of so many others, he
helped shape the world we inhabit. He was a major force in
American studies. But, beyond that, he was a sharply
intelligent, deeply witty man, who was never happier than
talking to his friends around the world. He was fiercely
committed to education and to literature, and fought for
those causes. At the moment, though, it is that other
Malcolm we at UEA are thinking of, the delightful companion
and irreplacable friend.
