... by the way, DM (!), am a big fan of those David Brin "Uplift"
books. The first, more loosely connected trilogy--Sundiver, Startide
Rising, The Uplift War--isn't so well served by the, so far,
"concluding" trilogy--Brightness Reef, Heaven's Reach, Infinity's
Shore--but Brin's other books are worth looking into as well. The
Postman deserved somewhat better that that Kevin Costner adaptation

novel, but it's just opposite Bruce Sterling in the "hard" SF meets
cyberpunk sweepstakes, i.e., on the Arthur C. Clarke side. His The
Transparent Society is sort of a nonfiction social critical companion to
Earth. The short fiction is hit-and-miss, but ... haven't, however,
read Glory Season or his Foundation prequel yet, so ... but anyone hear
a faint "Godot" echo in "Godolphin"? "If I'd have meant God, I would
have written 'God,'" or somesuch ...
