Possibly.
"The rest" is part of an equation. There is old Stencil's journals and a
much bigger picture which is presently beyond young Stencil's reach.
Herbert grows his underwater farm mostly from "the rest," his own
embelishments, conscious and not.
"The rest" might only mean to point to the different sources of the
dossiers: old Stencil's journals and "impersonations and dreams," which
would not imply any bigger picture, only two sources of incomplete
knowledge.
But Herbert is clearly in search of "V." and some legacy from his father.
For me the bigger picture is the quest. The lack of "real" data, let alone
relavent insight is at the forefront of this whole book, but the need to
find the bigger picture presses hard. Mother and Father seem the bigger
picture for youg Stencil.
