Quite right on both points. On the second,  for some time now I've been rebelling
against quotation marks (except when someone is being quoted)  even when the in
meaning is ironic. Melting pot was the term used in the earlier days of American
immigration history. Since the sixties or seventies it is no longer used
seriously..
