(103) an ideal of nasal beauty established by movies, advertisements,
magazine illustrations. Cultural harmony, Schoenmaker called it.

True Confession:

When I was very young I was subject to lobbying by my elders as to my future
career, especially by my step-grandfather. He was a semi-ne'er-do-well who
waited for his father to die for an inheritance not worth such anticipation.
  He wanted better for me.

He wanted me to be an MD. He bought me a chemistry set, a microscope, books
on anatomy and astronomy. I took all the ingredients of the chemistry set
and mixed them all together. I wanted an explosion! Nothing happened.
Eventually I also realized that I wasn't too excited about cutting people
open either. But I did harbor thoughts about becomming a plastic surgeon...

I would look at people's faces on the street, and I would mentally
reconstruct them. Face-sculpting was my temporary fantasy. I am still
fascinated with faces. I draw them now, and so I reconstruct them to my
liking. But the best ones are those with uncommon features. I can draw
strange faces all day long. Beautiful faces also have their strange side,
but their owners are usually very hostile to seeing that side drawn on
paper...
