Back on Christmas eve in 1984, for no particular
reason except that the photograph I found in one of
those "Time-Life" histories had that "Gilded Age" look
about it, I started drawing a charcoal portrait of
Evelyn Nesbit, a showgirl in the early 1900's whose
claim to celebrity had to do with her involvement with
famous architect Sanford White -- an involvement that
eventually got him shot by her jealous husband.  I
finished the picture well past midnight.  Only later
did I find out that she had been born on Christmas
day, 1884.

Cue eerie music...
