A few weeks ago, the eminent French social theorist Jacques Derrida paid a 
visit to my university. Anticipating a large crowd, the events staff set up 
remote viewing rooms, with video projectors and echelons of folding chairs. 
In the end, however, the extensive setup wasn't needed — Derrida barely 
filled the auditorium. Not too good for one of the fathers of postmodernism, 
especially after he'd stuffed the same hall past fire-safety capacity in 
years before. It was a telling denouement to the culture wars Derrida himself 
helped spark....
