If my Memory speaks the right words, the title equals the first 
line of Homer's _Odyssey_. (The words also point to the somewhat
irritating notion that the narrating oldtimer does not have any 
direct and candid relation to the past any longer - which, in a 
way, makes the narrator always already "modern".)
