  this could be the movies made after the books of karl may (- the guy who, 
  before elvis, marlon brando and their followers moved in, did more for the 
  'americanization' of the male german child than anybody else). "unter geiern", 
  "der schatz im silbersee", and, of course, "winnetou 1", "winnetou 2", and -  
  there he dies, and all us tough boys, 1974, were secretly crying in our     
  cinema seats ("juniorkino" on sunday morning for 1 deutschmark in the   
  holtenauer straße in kiel)- "winnetou 3". these were all european   
  co-productions ("deutsch-französisch-italienisch-jugoslawischer   
  spielfilm")that were, actually, shot not in arcadia but in yugoslavia. their  
  artistic quality is poor, but these films belong to the common cultural   
  knowledge of my generation. everybody here knows them.
