I forget his exact words in the rather moving speech he made at the Johnson
Space Center, right after the tragedy, but dimly recall him invoking some
term suggesting that the crew had been essentially vaporized immediately
with the intial explosion. It felt good at the time, although there was no
reason to believe that was what really happened. I'm not claiming R. was
guilty of anything other than saying what we all hoped had been the way
they died- but that in way was a type of denial, and perhaps, an example of
how we can be led away from difficult realities that need to be faced.
