Writing Theory

Continuing with the thought that Pynchon is writing one big novel, COL49 seems
almost like an outtake from an idea while writing GR and M&D. This is not at
all to criticize the book, but its themes, while found in V., GR, and M&D,
hmm...I'm not quite sure how to say this correctly. I think of COL49 (and
Vineland, for that matter) as outtakes from other works, not to say that they
were originally part of other works. I have in my mind a picture of a jazz
improvisation...the entire song may be termed V.GRM&D, but the composer may
decide that he really wants to play around with a theme that came up during the
composition...if that makes any sense at all.

And a question to go along with this: do the letters mention the works, the
four big novels being worked on? COL49 and Vineland just don't strike me as
being termed 'big' novels. I know there were rumors of M&D as far back as the
publication of GR (okay, I don't "know" this, but a book-selling friend of mine
told me this so I'll believe him for now): are there any rumors floating around
now?

Also, in regards to GRGR: keep it going. Very informative. Way over my head
at times, but an excellent source for some questions. I'm more of a lurker than
participant because I had just finished a reread of GR before the GroupRead
began, but I definitely think it's worthy of continuation.

Peace,
Mark
