"you can't be shakespeare & you can't be joyce/ so what is left instead?"
(magic & loss)
thought some of you might be interested to hear that lou reed has created a,
well, edgar-allan-poe-revue with stage manager robert wilson. the title is
"poetry" (- first 3 letters as caps). the opening night will be on coming
sunday in the hamburgian thalia theater (- the place, where wilson, together
with waits & burroughs, produced "the black rider", a piece chris k. is quite
fond of). personally i won't go there, but if someone does & needs a bed & a
beer, (s)he can find it here.
in this week's "der spiegel" lou reed says about poe: "to the mind of an 8
year old child his texts might appear sinister, but i'm some years older & i
consider his work to be very funny & formed by deep truth. this
complicatedness, this complexity! this psychology & mysteriousness! what a guy!
his texts are to me a wonderful dream." oh really?!
asked whether it was difficult to get into poe's language our average guy goes
on: "you won't realize what's poe & what's me. difficult or easy, that's not
the way i think. who cares whether it takes five minutes or a year? working, i
always follow my instict. in this case it was great fun to write with a
vocabulary which died out a long time ago &, on the other side, to put in words
of our time the way poe might have done it ..."
ok, turn it down. i think we've got an impression by now. isn't that sad? i
mean, it's nice when a few dozen people get motivated to (re)read poe, but
this revue, i'd bet a lot, is, according to the high standards of rock-n-roll
art lou reed did set in the 60s & 70s, boring academic crap. seeking
highbrow reputation. laurie is whale watching while lou plays with the raven.
what will they do next? a great musical show about the diaries of thoreau?!
this afternoon i got myself randy newman's "bad love" [1999]. track number 3
is called "i'm dead (but i don't know it)". some lyrics: "i have nothing left
to say/ but i'm gonna say it anyway/ thirty years upon a stage/ and i hear the
people say/ why won't he go away?/ ... i have a family to support/ but surely,
this is no excuse/ i've nothing further to report/ time you spend with me/ is
time you lose/ ... when will i end this bitter game?/ when will i end this
cruel charade?/ everything i write sounds the same/ each record that i'm
making/ is like a record that i've made/ just not as good ...". the guitar
tells you the rest.
oh, i nearly forgot: in uncruel april there will be a "new" lou reed record.
it's called "ecstasy" & the man tells us to use for it "a very good stereo, it
will change you, physically & mentally." you may check it out. or not.
