Try _A History of the Modern World_ by Palmer and Colton.  I've only read
the jacket, but that might be up your alley.

Also try _History of the American People_ by Paul Johnson, or anything by
Noam Chomsky.  Another must-read is _The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich_
by William L. Shirer.

You might try using a site like amazon.com or any other book site that can
give recommendations based on your liking of a specific book.  Not sure how
well this works, but I've discovered a couple things here and there.
