Sandoz

Steve Maas wrote about a 1935 Mari Sandoz book about her father, a Nebraska 
homesteader:

>Following the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre is the following observation: 
>"There was something loose in the world that hated joy and happiness as it 
>hated brightness and color, reducing everything to drab agony and gray."

...which also sounds a lot like the first chapter of L. Frank Baum's Wizard 
of Oz.
