So perhaps I'm off by a few days. The website says, 

"On June 8, 1948 the first sports car bearing the name Porsche is born." 

The world famous F. Porsche had built and driven race cars
previously but none answered to the name as far as I know.

I got a ride in one of the early 356s (dark red) around the streets of
L.A. hanging on for life as a cousin demonstrated their cornering
and braking ability. He brought it home from the Zone on being demobed. A
few years ago when I visited him it was still in his garage (on blocks
more the pity).
