rj,
Nobody's "misreading" you. Bizarre they may be, but your allegations are
clear as can be, as is the elitism with which you arrogate to yourself the
right to say what is and isn't to be accepted as a valid approach to
Pynchon criticism. Your posts in which you ridicule and insult Hollander's
work speak for themselves and can be found in the archives for all to read.
His articles, too, speak for themselves; I doubt that many, if any readers
other than yourself, will find in them what you find, that H claims to have
a unique grip on the meaning of Pynchon's fiction (I've read all of his
articles and am unable to come to such a conclusions); he's just offering
his interpretations as you acknowledge in the same breath in which you
again accuse him of "claiming that readers who do not share his
interpretation are "lacking" something"; you appear to have missed
completely the point of his Magic Eye metaphor, or perhaps you're just
twisting and misrepresenting it on purpose; and you appear to completely
misunderstand his point about "misdirection" which is a technique he
clearly attributes to Pynchon, not some fault to he finds in Pynchon's
readers. Not in the P-list archives are the wild accusations about him that
you've been circulating offlist -- your simple denials now can't erase the
spiteful persiflage you've flung in so many directions in recent weeks and
months. Before you return again to your claim that he, or me, or any other
Pynchon reader you disagree with may be "hearing voices" you might want to
revisit some of the absurd charges you've bandied about in your offlist
campaign against Hollander. This is an unmoderated list in which you or
anybody else is free to say anything and I respect that; I'll also take
advantage of same liberty to take this opportunity once again to protest
at the way you use Pynchon-L to pursue an absurd and baseless vendetta
against a respected Pynchon scholar.
