An "optical wipe" is an optical effect which changes from one shot to the
next by giving the appearance of the new shot "wiping" the old shot off the
screen; a matte line borders the two shots, and crosses the screen.  The
"revised" version of Star Wars (Episode 4: A New Hope) has a lot of
"digital" wipes replacing what were just ordinary cuts in the original 1977
release.
