I'm not sure I could rank a top three because I think most of Dick's books
have at least a grain of greatness in them.
A Scanner Darkly is my favorite novel by Dick. It also shows how well he
was actually capable of writing when given time and inspiration. It's funny
and also very sad at times: an accurate depiction of a certain sort of drug
using culture. The Vintage edition has the following blurb from the Village
Voice: "Dick was many authors: a poor man's Pynchon, an oracular postmodern,
a rich product of the changing counterculture."
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep is also a good one and I've always had a
soft spot for Dr. Bloodmoney. The first book in the Valis trilogy is great
as well. Is that called The Divine Invasion? I can't remember. I've also
heard someone suggest that Dick inspired Gravity's Rainbow with his book
Time Out of Joint. It's a tenuous connection but another good book.
