As you will recall, I recently posted a request that the plister who strongly
suggested that I read Warlock by Oakley Hall contact me offlist. cfa did, and
I in return expressed my thanks for the recommendation. cfa suggested I
advise the list of my opinion of the novel. Therefollow my comments to cfa
offlist and cfa's response:

No beef at all, mon ami. I thoroughly enjoyed it. A rare treat indeed is the
novel one cannot put down but one does not want to end. Thanks so much for
the recommendation. I have at least on thing in common with TRP. As I recall,
your recommendation was more an urging, even a "must do." I am impressed that
you perceived my tastes so well, at least in novels. Of course, "Warlock" is
a great novel regardless of my tastes or anyone's. Again, many thanks. Happy
C21.

and many happies to you too.

TO be honest, I expected most people to come back with
comments like "trite" and "puerile", so far, nothing like it. At least
two other listers have gotten back to me with similar responses, for
something so (relatively) straight-forward, it can leave a grown
cynic shaken. In fact, the Badger also complained about it having
to end, pretty much echoing my own despair.

Have consumed two more Hall titles since - his first and most
recent. The former was a "PERMA BOOKS" paperback from 1953
with a cover price of $ 0.35...The Corpus of Joe Bailey...long haul,
a little dated, but it gave evidence of the elements which made
WARLOCK such a stunner. The most recent is actually not a very
good mystery novel, but a great historical one....he paints an
interesting Ambrose Bierce....

Two other titles await, and if you are seriously inclined to Hall, I'm
here to help.

Now do me a big favor - please share your enthusiasm for the book
with the list. The book deserves it, and I really believe that
ANYONE who wants to get a handle on P's moral universe needs
to read it. The greater the variety of voices which speak up, the
better the chance that the list may pick it up and run...it would
make for some crackling exchanges....

be good.

love,
cfa

I echo cfa's opinion of the moral universe issue. Regardless of what your
opinion of either of our posts, these or any in the past, do your self a
favor-read Warlock. It will help you not only understand TRP a little better,
but also help you understand why you like to read what he writes.
