With all the attention to potassium permanganate's use in rockets and the
cocaine trade the Pincher resisted the temptation to make some ribald
mention of the other prominent use the purple stuff was put to in these
years--that is, as a disinfectant. The purple stain around intimate body
parts was seen frequently in barracks and shower rooms. Don't remember
what doctors and medics considered it a cure for. Scabies, crabs, lice,
ticks, mites, etc. In any case it was a clear warning not to get too
near.
