speaking of sheep

the character roy baty in dick's electric sheep is frustrated in the attempt 
to induce through drugs some sort of group-mind share ala the human's 
Mercerism and empathy box--but it is described in the novel as Baty 
frustrated in being kept at the edge of an enlightenment he wasn't made to 
experience.  Now this reminds me of Tchiterchine, who if I'm not mistaken, 
is half metal as it is. any thoughts?
