And this is what the reader conditioned by the way text (including many
realist and Modernist fictions) is traditionally modulated *expects*.

Indeed. But as Barthes also demonstrates in *S/Z*, a readerly or writerly
reading is not inherent to the text: either or both strategies can be
adopted in the reading process.
