Everyone (including the narrator) uses it as a personal pronoun, but this
disguises the fact that what it invariably signifies isn't a person or group
or entity at all. It's beyond that.

The long and short of why this confuses me:  are they talking about 
*anything* at all, or is everyone, including the narrator, just off their 
rocker?  How can we say that they are invariably signifying something when 
that something doesn't even qualify as an entity?  

I don't doubt that there's a good answer to this, and I'm curious to here it.
