Interesting discussion here, thanks guys. 

The allusion to Conrad's {we are in the Zone in most of
scenes being discussed) Heart of Darkness on the first page
of the Zone provides the answer to this reader. Not in the
Zone. In the Zone no one is even sure what the trial is for.
It's quite liberating isn't it. Judge not and yee shall not
be judged. But this reader doesn't live in the Zone. The
journey into the Darkest Heart, where no black and white
(LIGHT) exists, is journey to the Zero, a place Slothrop
can't handle. Can you handle it? How about Enzian?
