McCarthy published Cities on the plain in may of 1998.  He's no Phillip 
Roth, but I think one novel every two years is a pretty decent pace.

Keep in mind that during the same time he wrote the screenplay for his _All 
the Pretty Horses_ which probably kept him quite busy.  I'd imagine it's 
tough to rewrite your book about a 16 year-old into a screenplay about a 30 
year-old Matt Damon.
