The literature of the Strugatskys indeed has a lot to do with *Gravity's
Rainbow* though I'm not sure if Pynchon has read the Brothers or vice versa.
It's not only the Zone but the zeros too and the question if we still can
iagine a good future for our children or have lost this ability.
Like *GR* *Roadside Picnic* is a dark, turned upside down fairytale, very
ecological, asking what technology does to
humanity, to the future of mankind (disguised by the description of how we
use to deal with our children). An earlier novel by the brothers with this
topic is called *The Far Rainbow*.
By the way I too didn't like the movie like the book, too much is lost like
would be lost if someone tried to make a movie of *GR*. But I liked the
movie of *Hard to be a God*.
