Apparently Cowboy Wally was not clear enough for you.
If the point of being on this list it to out-emote overy verbose English
majors from around the globe I will sign off right now. I can think of few
things more unpleasant, except maybe going to the Renasance fair with
theater majors or talking to an art student about their performance piece.
I'm not suggesting that GR should be availble in Cliff's Notes (who would
write _those_?), but I have decided that since I really like his books, I
would like to encourage other folks to read them, not to try and raise the
bar. "Well, not everyone understands it the first time out. I hear Stephen
King has a new one out, why don't you try that? Or maybe comic books?"
I'm sorry, I'm getting a little angry. I apologize- I do recognize that
this is not going to be 'pop' next week. But really, if you think it's a
great piece of work, literary craftsmanship and all, why is it so unlikely
that at some point, more than a handful (The Inner Junta) of people would
know these books?

Yes I agree we must resign ourselves to the fact that Pynchon will never
reach down to the masses. Or ever reach up to the movers and shakers
for that matter. However it's also my observation over time that the
p-list itself is exceedingly egalitarian. Any other stance would quickly
be laughed into extinction, wouldn't it? A fair number of
participants show definite signs of having spent time in graduate
English departments or the equivalent. However actual disputes and
unpleasantnesses when they pop up seldom are over intellectual
matters. It's more often than not a question who can out emote the next
guy over various justice matters (race in American and the Holacaust to
name a few) and what Pynchon "obviously" stands for. This can get quite
violent and for the wicked like myself not entirely unwelcome but the
price to be paid to one's dignity for forgetting to take one's  thorazine
that morning can be quite high.
