Slothrop's Nativity & Religion

Hello again, Jeremy!

That was sure a superquick response (two, as a matter of fact!) to my
eMail on Friday - you must have been OnLine; sorry I didn’t reply but in my friend’s computer shop it was “pushing” closing time (5:30 pm
CEDT) and I didn’t have the information I do now . . . or is this just the
“joys & sorrows” of an OffLine member on the pynchon-l?!

Interesting to read that you yourself were brought up in the Congrega-
tional creed, as well as the transformation from the CC to the UCC. I
guess, though, that in both TS and TP’s lifetime the CC was still the
original “Puritan” CC (Congrgational Church - with whatever that implies), and I was thinking more along the Puritan lines than along
any “witch-h(a)unting, witch-burning lines.

Now to conclude this part of the discussion (the Puritan part), on p.
188 .... “it’s a ‘Puritan’ reflex of seeking other orders behind the visible, also known as paranoia, ...” (Slothrop to himself after the “rescue”).

It is not so much either any Puritan or paranoia question from my part,
just rather a gathering of all information relating to the Nativity of TS as a 12th House double Virgo. What is your own relation to astrology, if any? Or do you, and most others, think that I am wasting my time?!

“Uncle Douglas” (definitely NOT “Uncle Lyle”) - still seeking clues, ideas and suggestions from the pynchon-l for the plausible birth date of TS in the sign of Virgo in either 1918-19. I have my own ideas, please come with yours...

PS: on this same page 188 there is one of the many correspondences
to “The Recognitions” by Wm. Gaddis, a book I also have read from cover-to-cover three times, ...”GR” starts with a paraphrase of the first line of Rilke’s first Elegy, “R” ends with a paraphrase of the last line of
Rilke’s tenth Elegy - a coincidence?!
