Fellow Members of the Pynchon-L,
As a newly subscribed member to this Pynchon-L, please allow me
to introduce myself - and I will do my best to try to keep this intro as short as possible. My name is Douglas Kløvedal Lannark (hope that Danish o with a slash through it came through on your computers), I am 56 years of age, have NO academic degree, am fluent in three languages (English, Danish & German), can manage my way thru about three more, do not posses an OnLine computer at home and have only been around the cyber community since June 1997. This is my very first, virgin youd might say, experience with a mailing list. Hope you will bear with me in the beginning and that we can have a successful exchange of information. I am looking forward to it, really!
Please call me Douglas and not Doug. If there are any other persons already on the List with the name Douglas, then we will have to find an appropriate nickname for me, like "Onkel Douglas" as I am known in Copenhagen - although I am a grandfather, I am still referred to as an Uncle. Otherwise I will leave that up to some innovative member on the List who is fascinated "by the act of naming!"
Since 1967 I have been a professional astrologer (please, no ridicule from all you sceptics out there), have published in serious American, German, Australian, Danish and Scandinavian periodicals, worked in two documentary films (Danish & British), appeared on television and radio programs in the US, Germany and Denmark, but yet to have published a book - so many in so many languages already around and most of them just re-hashing the same old story. In astrological circles I am known as "The Cosmic Adjustor" - and you know where that came from, dont you!?
The main reason why I just joined this list is that I am attempting to cast the horoscope of Tyrone Slothrop - been working on it for three weeks now and the time has come to ask for some help to clear up many of the conjectural chronological confusions in GR from any willing source available. We know that TS is a double Virgo [p. 699] and a "messy" one at that [p. 18] which definitely places him in the 12th House, where he worked for ACHTUNG. True to the rest of the novel, here is the initial astrological binary: orderly-Virgo in messy 12th House, technician in psychic domain. As an earth sign, Virgo rules
paper and as a water house, the 12th rules fog, mist and steam, thus giving us "Paperware in Vaporware!!"
We also know that TS was born in Mingeborough, MA., Berkshire County, but we are not given a date or year. So this is my appeal to those of you who have some interest, love (?!), for astrology and as well a profound understanding of the chronology in GR to help me agree on a plausible date. Whenever they are completed the results and the chart will be put on the Net/Web at Otto Sells Site. I am not in any great hurry, do believe that TP either toyed with the idea of developing Slothrop around some fictive chart or actually looked-up and discussed unusual "early" Virgo dates with a qualified astrologer. Astrology is used in all his other works, culminating in *M & D* and TP himself is born under the major astrological indicator - a Sun / Uranus conjunction.
There are many clues scattered through GR concerning TSs age:
Infant Tyrones conditioning in 1920 [p. 84] (up to what age is one considered an Infant?). Young Tyrone awakened by big and little cousins in April 1931 [p. 29-30] (how young is young to have both big and little cousins?). College boy, and classmate of JFK, vomiting beer in the Roseland Ballroom in 1939 [p. 63, 623 & 688] (We all know the legal drinking age in the US is 21and that college students in the US begin at an earlier age than in Europe). Flashback in March 1945 that his father made a deal some 20 years ago and that he had nothing against Uncle Lyle swinging him around upside-down by his feet [p. 284-86] (until what age in 1924-5 is a child light enough to be
swung around by its feet?). The obituary vision aboard the ANUBIS in July 1945: Died, Rocketman, pushing 30... [p. 463] (one of the most misleading statements regarding his age, as anything past 25 could be colloquially regarded as pushing). The statement in August/Sept. 1945: "Past Slothrops, say averaging one a day, ten thousand of them..." [p. 624] (ten thousand days equals 27 years, 4 months and 16 days giving a birth date around the Spring Equinox 1918; but we know that TS is a double Virgo and past Slothrops are averaging).
These are the main clues I have found up until now. Anybody ready to help? Come with more clues, tips suggestions. I have three dates, years, in mind; but one is too early (4th Sept. 1915), one may be too late (8th Sept. 1919) and 31st Aug. 1918. Those "ten thousand" past Slothrops are a very convincing argument for 1918, if TP meant it that way. Finally to aid those of you willing to help, - in order to have a convincing 12th House all dates after the 9th-10th of Sept. are out of the
question, as are days with the Moon in Virgo (not a triple Virgo) and not the symbolic days of Sept. 1st (start of WW II) or August 29th (Goethes birthday) as TP definitely would have made references to these dates.
OK, thats it for now. Sorry that this intro turned out longer than Id intended and looking forward to the first responses. I am prepared to answer astrology-related questions on all the works of TP, but no questions regarding your own personal charts. Please send page number, but do be patient as I am not OnLine on a daily basis.
Thank you,
Douglas Lannark
