"3 in the zone toto, i have a feeling we're not in kansas any more ...
-dorothy, arriving in oz" (p. 279)
in a way the zone i s oz. this epigraph of the novel's third part is
dorothy's "first comment on stepping through the door into a brilliantly
colored world, the drab black-and-white of kansas now behind her"
(weisenburger: grc, p. 149). the film's switch from black-and-white to
color is one of the crucial moments in the metaphysics of popular culture.
a-and, of course, colored film has a lot to do with the chemical industry. in
a way tyrone i s dorothy. there are, i think, other key references. anyone?
