   in a way the zone  i s  oz. this epigraph of the novel's third part is    
   dorothy's "first comment on stepping through the door into a brilliantly    
   colored world, the drab black-and-white of kansas now behind her"    
   (weisenburger: grc, p. 149). the film's switch from black-and-white to       
   color is one of the crucial moments in the metaphysics of popular culture.   
   a-and, of course, colored film has a lot to do with the chemical industry. in 
   a way tyrone  i s  dorothy. there are, i think, other key references. anyone?
