In a recent documentary film about the Battle of the Bulge in WWII I recall
mention of sodium amytal used by army doctors to treat acute battle fatigue.
The solidier would be knocked out for twleve to fourteen hours, forced to
re-live his experiences in nightmares, then given 48 hours to rest and
shipped back to the front.
Also, in re of nothing in particular, 1904 was a banner year for violence.
The Russians & Japanese were setting new records in mass slaughter in
Manchuria, while the American Army was turning the island of Samar in the
Phillipines into a "Howling Wilderness" as per the orders of General Smith,
who told his men to kill every male over the age of ten. This was also the
war in which the Americans started using the term "gook" to refer to their
Asian enemies. It was also a year of some all-time highs for lynchings in
the USA.
