GRGR(22) - Slothrop asking about the S-Geraet

When Slothrop is asking Der Springer about the S-Geraet, I get the impression he
is being deliberately obtuse -- Narrisch gets freaked out, and I can understand
his being worried about Slothrop. Am I reading this in? Or why would Slothrop be
acting this way? I don't have my copy at hand, but I'll post later on some
examples of the behavior I'm talking about.
