 "he'd begun to talk the way the captain in w o z z e c k sings, his voice
breaking suddenly up into the highest registers of hysteria." (p. 465)

this refers to alban berg's opera version of georg büchner's famous
fragmentary play. during his period of free atonality berg worked on this
opera between 1917 and 1921. the opening night was in berlin in 1925. this
beautiful work of art became the most successfull opera of the neue musik.
adorno, who elaborated his composition skills with berg, wrote about wozzeck:
"the building is so perfect, that it requires of the listener nothing else but
the close willingness to receive what it lavishly gives for a present. (s)he
shouldn't frighten away from a love, which, without backing, seeks the human
beings there, where there are most needy". (m.o.p.a.t. from "berg. der meister
  des kleinen übergangs" [1968]).
