Can anyone shed some light...

I came across this line in Barthelme's "The Educational Experience" and I am
fairly certain that I read it also somewhere in one of Pynchon's books...Am
I insane? Of course, but not because of this...Any info/history would be
greatly appeeciated by this insufferably curious newbie...
