Slothrop(AKA Jonah) is rescued from the sea by the Mothership: Frau Gnahb,
"the terror of the high seas," and her terrorized son, "Silent Otto." It
just so happens that they're also heading to Swinemunde. Lucky Slothrop!
While his evening clothes dry Slothrop snoozes and cuddles up with
Bianca/Shirley T. "Oh my goo'ness!"
He awakens in Swinemunde, the storm having passed. "Just as Geli said," he
finds Der Springer out on the promenade. Presented with the plastic knight,
Gerhardt von Goll presents himself, and now we ALL know that Der Springer is
Greta's Director.
Der Springer tells us the secret to his power: he has learned to read the
patterns of life and has thus been freed, "no longer an actor [but][...] on
the other side of the camera." This is his transcendence into the third
dimensional travel.
Enter Narisch, the flasher-clown complete with rubber chicken (a dead
turkey), Der Springer's partner-in-crime and former "inertial guidance"
specialist for the Rocket.
Der Springer says something "shitty" and then with a short lecture and a
song we learn what separates the preterite from the elect in these circles:
The Black Market.
"Among the cargo" being loaded onto Frau Gnahb's vessel are six feathered
chorus girls, a troupe of chimps, and cases of vodka. Oh boy, are we gunna
have fun!
On the way to Swinemunde, Slothrop and von Goll play a verbal cat & mouse
game revolving around the S-Gerat, who has it, and who wants it. Der
Springer and Narisch also engage in a short game of "Paranoia."
As the boat approaches Swinemunde a large face peers "over the modeltop"
down at Slothrop and company. The eyes in "black rimmed lenses" are now (at
Rocket Noon) revealed to be the Bicycle Rider in the Sky, AKA the Fool, AKA
Slick. Welcome to Swinemunde, Slothrop!
Tchitcherine "responds with interest" to von Goll's bait, the rumor that he
possessed the S-Gerat, and was offering it for sale. Von Goll is detained
and all hell breaks loose when Russian troops, drunken chimps and
scantily-clad chorus girls mix it up. The resulting chaos is perfect for
Frau Gnahb's rescue plan, a diversionary feint for Slothrop, Narisch, and
Otto to "sneak in and grab Der Springer." Slothrop reluctantly accepts his
role. "Mutti" has spoken.
Once Mommy's gone, Otto expounds his "Mother Conspiracy Theory." These
Mothers, it seems, are really Masters in the S&M of childhood guilt.
"Tristan and Isolde" is their anthem.
And so ends GRGR(22).
