"SPOILER" (but at this point in this GRGR, I think such warnings pointless): 
  This is definitely a subject of much debate.  What kind of savior/hero, if 
any, is Slothrop?  In the upcoming "Counterforce" chapters he is "a good guy 
after all," and the "Pope" as sent his agents out to retrieve the 
Mennisinger, but they fail, of course.  It's too late.

This question will occupy me for the rest of this book, if not after.
