Wouldn't it have been lucky if the Polish word used to translate
Saussure's "difference" happened to sound exactly like the
gerund form of a Polish verb meaning both to differ and to defer.

Just out of curiosity, is "difference" (or thereabouts) a
Polish word by importation?
