>Hi everyone,

Hi, Jere!

>Geez, this week we finish out "In The Zone" and next week we start
>reading "The Counterforce" -- of whom, note, there have already been
>a couple of mentions. Is Slothrop a member of the Counterforce?

Slothrop IS, and has been growingly so since at least the Pie-in-the-Sky
episode, the Counterforce. He can't help it. He'd readily apologize for
dragging you into it all if you crossed his path. If it happens, count
yourself blessed...

>Is "member of the Counterforce" as meaningless an expression as "member of
>the Hierarchy"? (I think The Hierarchy is a good name for Them.)

No. The difference is distinct, despite the inherent mutuality.

Intent might provide the division between the two, but we are meant to ask
these questions. _They_ HAVE staked a colony in all our souls (GR 32), and
it seems our only redemption is our willingness to die for the Counterforce.
The Counterforce demands willing Martyrdom. Slothrop has put himself in
harms way repeatedly since his flight into the Zone. He might have lost his
balls by now, if not his life, had he been less willing to "live." He can't
help himself.

God Bless Him!

David Morris
