slothrop's girth

Slothrop's girth seems malleable, like his identity -- he's as fat as
suitable for a particular moment. Remember, once he's in the Zone, he's
probably starving, most nights.  We should also keep in mind that a German
kid calling him "the fattest man in the world" would have Herman Goering
as a reference point.  On the other hand, I've always thought that Major
Marvey is fatter than Slothrop, or at least more repulsively fat, if that
makes sense.

Maybe Tyrone's just big-boned.
