Regarding the issue of how relatively pleasant Belgium was during the early
part of World War II when compared with the latter "post-war" period when
the bombs were dropping, it's worth remembering that anti-Jewish laws were
instituted in the wake of the Nazi invasion. According to the Wiesenthal
Center <http://motlc.wiesenthal.org/pages/t006/t00637.html>, about 25% of
Belgian Jews were deported to concentration camps. Of those 25,631, only
1,244 returned. Most of the other 75% of Belgian Jews fled the country.
Yehuda Bauer's book The Holocaust cites reports of deported Jews leaping
off of camp-bound trains, and corpses of some of those deportees being
found along the tracks.
