Wissmann

Finally got my copy of Johannes Fabian's Out of Our Minds: Reason and
Madness in the Exploration of Central Africa (Berkeley: U of California
P, 2000), and I notice there's some mention of one Herman (von)
Wissmann, "Deutschlands groesster Afrikaner" ("Germany's greatest
African"), "one of the first to employ the Maxim gun in putting down the
Bushiri revolt in East Africa" (p. 273, though Fabian of course has the
benefit of an umlaut and that nifty German double-"s").  Imagine he's
come up before, if not here, elsewhere, in re: of course,
Weismann/Blicero, but ... well, will report back ...
