Michael Chabon's Adv. of Kavalier & Clay abounds with TRP homages:  Kavalier 
whistles "frenesi" in one scene, e.g.  A book I should have liked but was 
not "weird" enough for me, despite some good scenes with a golem. Expected 
less of a straight-forward story, I suppose
