The Shore Patrol is the US Navy's version of the Military Police.  I believe 
that in Benny Profane's day (correct me if I'm wrong) the men detailed to 
perform the duties of the SP in the Navy were chosen from members of the 
crew, not as in the Army, special Military Police trained to act only in that 
capacity.
