Cracow is a city in southern Poland. The taller of the two towers of St.
Mary's Church in Market Square has, since at least the early 16th century,
functioned as a watch-tower. A bugle-call has been played every hour from its
windows into the four quarters of the globe; its melody stops abruptly,
reputedly to commemorate the death of a watchman hit with a Tatar arrow.
