Flipping through a friend's Psychotronic Movie Guide last night, happened to
stop at the entry for Spirits of the Dead, a portmanteau film of Edgar
Allen Poe adaptations by three different directors (Fellini, Malle, Vadim).
Fellini's segment, a loose adaptation of EAP's "Never Bet the Devil Your
Head," stars Terence Stamp, and is named for his character, Toby Dammit.
Cf. Benny Profane? Such is my friend's speculation, at any rate. The film,
aparently, doesn't offer any further support, but Poe's story, well ...
well, TD and BF seem to share little beyond their profanity, but "NBTDYH"
seems to be, among other things, a satire not only of good old-fashioned
American Transcendentalism, but, in particular, of that notion of "the moral
of the story." Let me know ...

And do note that Luther, Calvin, and one Don Thomas de las Torres are named
therein ...
