Flipping through a friend's Psychotronic Movie Guide last night, happened to 
stop at the entry for Spirits of the Dead, a portmanteau  film of Edgar 
Allen Poe adaptations by three different directors (Fellini, Malle, Vadim).  
Fellini's segment, a loose adaptation of EAP's "Never Bet the Devil Your 
Head," stars Terence Stamp, and is named for his character, Toby Dammit.  
Cf. Benny Profane?  Such is my friend's speculation, at any rate.  The film, 
aparently, doesn't offer any further support, but Poe's story, well ... 
well, TD and BF seem to share little beyond their profanity, but "NBTDYH" 
seems to be, among other things, a satire not only of good old-fashioned 
American Transcendentalism, but, in particular, of that notion of "the moral 
of the story."  Let me know ...
