Nietzsche's Styles, Mark Kingwell,
Britannica.com
In an essay commemorating the 100th anniversary of Friedrich
Nietzsche's death, Britannica.com asked cultural critic Mark Kingwell
to consider the German philosopher's legacy -- a meditation on why he
still speaks to us today. Surveying a sampling of recent literature
on Nietzsche, Kingwell finds: "[F]ew [writers] are as bent, folded,
and spindled as Nietzsche, few are used to such bizarre and disparate
purposes. This is surely in part because Nietzsche is, as Tracy
Strong and Michael Gillespie put it in the introduction to their 1988
volume "Nietzsche's New Seas", 'the most protean of protean
thinkers.' Liberal or fascist, elitist or higher-order populist,
spiritualist or debunker, philosopher of happiness or of
despair--Nietzsche has been rendered into all these shapes and more."
