In an essay commemorating the 100th anniversary of Friedrich 
Nietzsche's death, Britannica.com asked cultural critic Mark Kingwell 
to consider the German philosopher's legacy -- a meditation on why he 
still speaks to us today. Surveying a sampling of recent literature 
on Nietzsche, Kingwell finds: "[F]ew [writers] are as bent, folded, 
and spindled as Nietzsche, few are used to such bizarre and disparate 
purposes. This is surely in part because Nietzsche is, as Tracy 
Strong and Michael Gillespie put it in the introduction to their 1988 
volume "Nietzsche's New Seas", 'the most protean of protean 
thinkers.' Liberal or fascist, elitist or higher-order populist, 
spiritualist or debunker, philosopher of happiness or of 
despair--Nietzsche has been rendered into all these shapes and more."
